On The 'Wright' Track At The Wahu Surfer Groms Comp

IT seems Lennox Head’s (NSW) Wright family can do no wrong, with the youngest of the surfing siblings Michael, 14, lighting up round one of the Gold Coast Wahu Surfer Grom Comp.
Following in the footsteps of his older brother Owen, who recently qualified for the 2010 ASP World Tour and older sister Tyler, who last week was crowned Australian U/18 Girls champion – Michael showed ability and competitive prowess beyond his years in punchy 0.5-1m conditions at Narrowneck.
Breezing through the first round of the U/15 Boys, Wright along with Sunshine Coasters Izak Clifford (Marcus Beach) and Eli Steele (Moffat Beach) set the tone for an intriguing final day of competition in the blue ribbon division, which will kick off tomorrow with round two, before progressing to the semi-finals and final in the afternoon.
However, the exciting junior affair wasn’t all just about the big kids, with the crowd favourite U/9 parent assist and U/11 Boys and Girls divisions serving up plenty of thrills, spills and smiles, as the tiny competitors tackled some solid waves.
Leading the charge was Coolangatta kids Dexter Muskins (U/11 Boys) and Jordan Wheatley (U/9 Boys) who each registered an impressive combined two wave total of 11.00 and 16.17 (out of a possible 20) respectively.
Offering a competitive, yet family orientated environment, the Gold Coast Wahu Surfer Groms Comp will conclude tomorrow with champions to be crowned in U/15 boys and girls, U/13 boys and girls, U/11 boys and girls and U/9 mixed parent assist.
