Hurley Announces Pro-Junior World Record US$25,000 First Prize for 2010 Hurley Burleigh Pro Junior!
26/12/2009
HURLEY is pleased to make the extraordinary announcement that first place in 2010’s Grade – 5 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Hurley Burleigh Pro Junior will receive a historic US$25,000 as part of a US$50,000 overall event prize-pool.
The first place prize announcement is a world-record for professional junior surfing and continues an incredible year for the international brand, which already included hosting the world’s two richest professional surfing events in history – the World Qualifying Series 6-Star Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing and the ASP World Tour Hurley Pro, which both boasted US$100,000 first place prizes.
Held at the Gold Coast’s (Queensland, Australia) iconic Burleigh Heads point break, the 2010 Hurley Burleigh Pro Junior presented by Nike 6.0 is set to attract the world’s best professional junior surfers.
As part of their continual support of junior surfing Jason Haynes from Hurley Australasia Marketing said he is excited about the historic announcement.
“To be able offer the richest first prize in junior professional surfing history is something Hurley and Australia can be proud of,” said Haynes.
“This (event) will bring the world’s best junior surfers from around the planet to compete up against our local talent and continue to showcase Queensland as a world renowned surfing destination,” he said.
Local Gold Coast City Councillor Greg Betts reiterated Haynes’ sentiment suggesting the event’s record first place prize and international field of competitors will showcase Burleigh Heads and the wider Gold Coast area to the world’s media.
“Hurley’s historic announcement will ensure the surfing world’s spotlight shines on the Burleigh Heads and Gold Coast area for what will certainly be a great 2010 Hurley Burleigh Pro Junior surfing event,” said Councillor Betts.
However, the event’s competitors are undoubtedly the one’s set to benefit the most, with the US$50,000 prize-pool providing an incredible financial incentive for surfers such as Mitch Crews (Queensland, Australia) and Cooper Chapman (New South Wales, Australia) who are aspiring to a career on the World Tour.
“The calibre of events Hurley is now hosting is the first time professional surfing has been able to sit alongside major global sports in terms of prize money, crowds and the whole show,” said Gold Coast competitor and local favourite Mitch Crews.
“It’s definitely going to shake things up a bit, especially at the junior level because we’ve never seen anything like this before, so expect to see me out at Burleigh all summer getting ready for the competition,” he said.
The January 22-26 competition window of the 2010 Hurley Burleigh Pro Junior presented by Nike 6.0 will also see the event’s finals conclude amidst the celebrations of Australia’s national day, bolstering the already festival style atmosphere associated with Hurley surfing events.
